MAKE UP MADNESS

13 August 2014 - 0 Comments

When your children get into make up, what do you want them to play with?

Like most kids, my daughters love to play with my make up.  Thankfully I don't need to worry about the ingredients - just the mess.  Oh the mess.  But as you all know with children comes worry, so one less worry is great.

But what about the make up .....

Lips are potentially one of our most alluring features so it pays to keep them in top condition. Flakiness, chapping and dryness are common issues because our lips lack protective oil glands and can't fend for themselves against hazards such as wind, sun, cold and air-conditioning. The key? Exfoliate and protect.

Buff up

Shop for natural lip care

If lips are particularly chapped and sore, use a damp and warm face cloth to moisten lips for a minute before gently buffing away any dead and flaky skin. Alternatively, for lips that are just looking a bit blah (steer clear if they're cracked), try rubbing a face exfoliant - we love Gaia Facial Exfoliant for its gentle Jojoba and corn beads and soothing sandalwood oil - over lips to remove dead skin and boost circulation. Bonus: lips will look pink, plump and pretty!

Slick lips

Keeping lips soft and supple requires regular balm application, particularly in harsh or drying environments - the beach, the wintery outdoors and an air-conditioned office all fit the bill. When shopping for balm, avoid petroleum-based formulations as they will only dry out lips further in the long run. Instead opt for balms and glosses with ingredients such as paw paw, honey and lanolin. We love Suvana Paw Paw & Honey Organic Lip Balm for its petroleum-free formulation, healing properties and sweet taste. Or try Mukti Honey & Macadamia Lip Balm for safe, long-wear lip protection.

  • Tip: Balms act as a great base for lipstick as they prevent lips drying out, add shine and help keep colour strong for longer. Mwah!

LENDING A HAND

Washing up, gardening, tapping the keyboard, fixing things…Hands go through a lot. Look after them with natural hand care that keeps things nourished, protected – and looking younger for longer..

Gentle washing

Yes, clean hands are necessary for keeping germs at bay, but astringent soaps can dry out hands and make them feel tight, chapped and sore. Instead, wash hands with gentle cleansers such as Biological Soap Hand & Body Wash – its nourishing and comes in 6 fragrances and are great for keeping hands moisturised, while the foaming action cleverly cuts back on water usage. Alternatively try Mukti Lemon Myrtle Hand Wash, which is both antibacterial and super gentle on hands.

Well nourished

So often hands are exposed to the elements. Give them some extra protection with barrier-forming hand creams that won’t wash off with the first rinse. Shea butter, wheat germ, jojoba and rosehip are all great for nourishing and protecting hands against the elements so make sure they feature in your hand cream if hands are suffering.

Hands not afraid to get down and do some good old fashion hard work? Enlist Gardener’s Hand Butter pre and post gardening. This emollient cream has heavy doses of Shea butter, jojoba and wheat germ oil to protect, sooth and recondition work-worn hands. For a more day-to-day option, try Sorbolene and mineral oil-free Mukti Hand & Body Lotion. It’s super nourishing but won’t leave hands greasy.

Great nails

Nourished and well-conditioned hands are immediately let down if nails are looking a tad daggy. Keep them filed neatly (short and blunt is the current favoured shape) and keep cuticles soft and clipped back. To avoid painful hangnails, dry flaky skin around the nails and brittle cuticles, invest in deeply conditioning oils such as Emma Organics Nail Oil. Dosed with biodynamic avocado oil, organic rosehip oil and olive leaf extract, a daily application of this little gem will protect nails from drying out and keep cuticles looking pristine.
